2007 Make Room For Health
In the Fall of 1990, representatives from Lanark Township approached the Rideau Valley District Health Council with a specific concern – the lack of a doctor in Lanark County’s Northwestern municipalities. The District Health Council raised the possibility of starting a Community Health Centre rather than simply trying to draw a physician to the area. The community did what they do best – they got organized to come up with a solution. Four years later, the foundation stones were laid for the construction of a Community Health Centre – designed to serve the health care needs of rural residents of north Lanark – and the North Lanark County Community Health Centre was born.
Over 15 years and well over 120,000 client visits later, the community need for local health care services and support had grown - beyond the walls of the existing building. Again, the citizens of the community did what they do best – they took on the challenge of fundraising to add a 3,000 square foot addition to the medical wing of the Health Centre.
With $80,484.86 donated by the 2003 International Plowing Match (Rural Expo 2003 Legacy Fund) to kick-start the “Make Room for Health” campaign, a committee of dedicated and inventive volunteers led the fundraising efforts. The support from individuals, businesses, groups and community organizations, local government and provincial grants was overwhelming! View the complete list of Donors. In slightly less than 2 years, $500,000 was raised to complete the expansion.
The building and opening of the expanded medical wing has been a proud accomplishment for all. The provision of more exam rooms, a central nursing hub, and more appropriate use of existing space for lung health, foot care, nutrition and physiotherapy has facilitated additional efficiencies and enhancements to services. The greatest benefit is that we are now able to provide more service to more clients. Over 2800 clients have registered with us and we continue to work towards our goal of eliminating the waiting list.
